SDK Availability

Postby forestplay » Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:49 pm

According to the Pebble Blog, the Software Development Kit is going to be available when the product ships for no cost!

That means a wide open development community. Hopefully the App Store is just as accessible.

The Pebble founder, Eric Migicovsky, said in a Reddit conversation that the Pebble SDK will be low level and in C.

More info will be announced later this summer, but we expect the low level SDK to enable developers to write apps in C

I can't wait, I have so many ideas. I guess I need to do some looking into C! I wish we could our hands on it early. I can't believe I missed out on the developers package on kickstart! Oh well, maybe I'll win one! I am very interested to find out the details on the WatchApp store, heard anything yet?

I think there's no reason to not release the SDK early for more people than just the 100 who pledged the Hacker Special. After all, the more people with an early start, the better :) I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Also, in the Wired interview Eric mentioned they've hired more engineers and are already working on both the SDK and the Store (hopefully the WatchApp, too).

My guess is that those who will receive the SDK early based on their selection of the Hacker Special are probably getting a "Beta" of the SDK. It's the dev team's way to limit exposure for a buggy/clumsy package. Having a chance for a bit of spit and polish after receiving feedback by people who are in fact financially committed before making it widely available is a smart move on their part. Better chance of a positive release.

I am personally very interested in the App Store. I want access to available app data for this forum's sister site, Pebble App Review.
